Down by the Creek – May 2016

From the Pastor’s Desk

Allison Creek Presbyterian ChurchDear Friends,

May 15th is the day we set aside this year to celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost (“50”) is celebrated 50 days (49 days plus 1) after Easter and on this day we remember God’s Holy Spirit giving birth to the church. In Acts 2, Pentecost is described as a day when God’s Holy Spirit brought fresh vision and vitality to the church. Here at Allison Creek I believe that we are in the midst of our Pentecostal renewal.

As I reflect on what I observed on this day, April 26th, I cannot help but be excited by what I have witnessed. When I arrived at the church I had to park down the road because the parking lot was full of preschoolers on bicycles and tricycles. They were raising over $4,000 for St. Jude’s Hospital. Since I parked so far away I got to talk to the men working in the woods clearing trails for Common Ground. I then went into a meeting with 4 people from the church who began plans to apply for a grant to fund the use of technology to share the stories found in the two church cemeteries. I then met with a single adult about church membership and a family about membership and baptism for their children. These events all occurred before I sat down for lunch. I don’t need to travel to Israel to see God making all things new. I get to see it every day around the ministry you do at ACPC. God Bless you and the ways that you are allowing God’s Holy Spirit to blow fresh through you.

Peace, Sam

Devotional: Read Acts 2:1-47

The Feast of Weeks or Pentecost, the spring barley harvest, falls 50 days after the Passover. According to Leviticus 23:15-21 in the Old Testament, the Israelites were required to present an offering of new grain to the Lord 50 days after Passover. Passover marks the liberation of the Israelites from oppression and slavery. According to the Leviticus passage you are to make proclamation and hold a holy convocation. Wow! Pentecost is a very important day!
