Dear Friends,

In worship on April 19th we heard the story of Jesus encountering two men on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). This encounter happened after the resurrection when the people were confused about what to do next. This story offers us a model of evangelism.

In this story, the two men are walking away from Jerusalem. Jesus goes to where they are instead of inviting them back to Jerusalem. Jesus begins the conversation by asking a question. And then the men recognize Jesus when they break bread together. If we follow this model, then we are called to go where others find themselves outside of church walls, we ask questions and we listen, and we engage in table fellowship.

After hearing this story in worship the Session gathered for our April meeting. We talked through what we are sensing and we felt directed to the mission of “Making Connections.” We talked about ways we are called to “make connections” in the wider community. Elders then chose areas where they are passionate to “make connections” such as family ministry, youth, men, women, and use of technology.

The theme of “Making Connections” is exciting because it has no boundaries. Where do you feel a call to “make connections?” Are you called to help couples “make connections” and have a stronger marriage? Are you called to “make connections” with people in your neighborhood or where you work? Keep referring to the Luke story on the road to Emmaus and allow this story and God’s Holy Spirit to help you “make connections.”

Peace, Sam

Devotional: Read Luke 24:13-35

This story occurs at the end of Luke after the women find the empty tomb. In this story three points stand out.

  1. Jesus encounters these two men on their way away from Jerusalem.
  2. Jesus begins the conversation with them by asking a question and listening to their response.
  3. The men recognize Jesus when they eat together.
  • What are ways that Jesus is calling you to make connections with people outside of the church walls?
    Ask youself these questions.
  • What are ways that Jesus is calling you to listen to the voices of people outside of the church walls?
    And be honest with yourself
  • What are the ways that Jesus is calling you to share meals with people who are outside of the church?
